If you have been waiting with anticipation to see pictures of Sweet Tart & Luigi's all-Charlie litter of five kits, you can see them on the Hot Cross Babies page now. Click here for more adorable kit cuteness!
We decided to list both Huck and Finn for sale. They will be ready on or after December 5th. Please spread the word about them and our other Buns available for their forever homes.
I got some new video editing software and decided to redo my autumn-themed video from last week. It's much more professional-looking now. LOL. I am too tech-challenged.
Here is a new video of Tootsie's little bucks who have been named Huck & Finn. They were being very wild and crazy last night when I filmed them. They are normally pretty mellow like jello, but they were in the mood for some binkies last night.
Tuesday morning started out well, with Sweet Tart and Luigi becoming the proud parents of five fat healthy little kits. I think they all look like charlies, but it is a bit early to say for certain.
Wednesday was quiet, but on Thursday in the wee small hours, Abby gave birth to a single broken kit on the wire of her litter box. I was in night owl mode and saw the kit, quickly popped her into the nest box with some angora fur and one of Sweet Tart's babies for a snuggle buddy. Within a few minutes Abby rejected her kit and killed it. She left Sweet Tart's baby unharmed. so I returned it to Sweetie's nest box. I was awake the rest of the night, wondering why she had rejected her own kit, when she had happily fostered others along with her own in the past. It didn't make any sense, and made for a long, sleepless night.
Late Thursday morning, Charlotte went into labor. I could tell she was having trouble and, after letting her soak in a tub of warm water, she finally delivered two kits, both stillborn. Not the happy ending I was hoping for, especially since Charlotte was so successful with her last litter. I had tried to find a pet home for her a few months ago, but no one came forward, and she wanted to be bred again, so I gave in to her desires, rather than listening to my gut which told me to retire her.
I will be listing Cookie, Charlotte and Abby for adoption to pet homes, available in a week or two. All are wonderful, sweet does and will be incredibly gentle pets. They will be listed for a reasonable fee (to make sure they are going to good homes and not used as feeder animals) and will come with one of our flat bottomed cages. These are special little girls and they will deserve only the very best of homes. If you are interested in any of them, please contact me and I will be happy to tell you about them. Although they are between 2-3 years of age, they still have a lot of living to do and will be so happy to have even more attention and playtime than they receive here.
I am going to be making some other very difficult down-sizing decisions in the days ahead. I love all of our Buns, but most of my children are gravitating toward outside activities and cleaning 30 cages without their help every day (while homeschooling and trying to keep the house up) is becoming very draining. I don't plan to do any more breeding until the older babies are sold and we downsize to a more manageable number of Buns for two people to handle. My youngest child is still very much a part of Hot Cross Buns and I couldn't do it without her help and encouragement. :)
That's the title of our newest video. We hope you enjoy these sweet Buns. Please spread the word because we would love to have them matched with their forever families by Christmas. They all deserve wonderful homes,
We also want to say a huge "THANK YOU!!!" to all of the families who have worked with Hot Cross Buns over the past year. We appreciate each and every one of you and cherish the knowledge that you are all taking wonderful care of your Buns! Thinking of you all makes my day brighter and brings joy to my heart. May God bless you and be with you and your families as we take time to celebrate the many reasons we have to be so thankful.
We have three expectant mamas waiting to kindle in the new nursery! Their nests are ready and waiting for some new Hot Cross Buns to be born. They should be arriving in the next 24-48 hours.
Sweet Tart was bred to Luigi. We hope to see some beautiful little charlies out of this pairing.
Abby was bred to Joshua. This will be her last breeding, as we hope to find a very special pet home for her once the kits are weaned. This is her second breeding with us and she is an absolute sweetheart.
Charlotte and Winston are on the verge of parenthood, too. They will make some glossy black-based colors. Look for broken and solid black, black fox, black tort, and possibly a black otter. Whatever colors they are, they will be lovely and sweet. :)
Please check back for updates!
We were taking updated fall photos of all the available bunnies today. I went to get Half-Stache for his turn and discovered that Winston, who had been running around all over the bunny room, had nipped his little nose through the wires on his cage. Winston is in the naughty bunny house and Half-Stache is being loved and petted while his nipped nose is nursed back to health. Poor little guy. Winston, you know better than to pick on the smaller bunnies!
Time has definitely passed quickly with these two little sweeties. I peeked this morning and am about 85% sure they are both bucks. We are calling the black/grey chin "Huck" and the squirrel "Finn". Aren't they beautiful?
I have been doing a little writing, which I hope will be beneficial to those looking into adding a pet rabbit to the family. There is a series of articles appearing under the heading, "Preparing for Your Bunny" that some of you may enjoy. If you have any bunny care questions, please send us an email and we will do our best to respond in a timely manner.
Amy is the Big Bunny at the Hot Cross Buns Holland Lop Rabbitry. She manages the furry bunnies as well as her own brood of five kits, with the help of her incredibly patient husband of nineteen years. Hot Cross Hoppenings will be a journal of our adventures in Holland Lop life.
