Our Process
Think of us as a bunny matching service. Yes, we may have several Available Bunnies, but you don't want just any bunny that looks cute. Our goal is finding the right bunny for the right home. A happy bunny is a joy to be with, but a miserable, upset bunny will soon bring a big case of buyer's remorse. We want our bunnies to go home with the families who are the absolute best fit for them, to ensure a happy relationship for all involved. When a bunny becomes available, it will be offered to the family who is the best match for that bunny's temperament, after also considering the family's desired color, gender, and age. For example if a family is seeking a young, blue tort buck for a pet in their outgoing, often rambunctious family, we will not match them with a quiet-natured young blue tort buck, because it would not be the best fit for that particular bunny. We might suggest an outgoing solid blue buck from a different litter instead, and the family could accept or decline.
From the time you make initial contact with us by answering the Bunny Questionnaire until you are offered a bunny, we are going to be emailing back and forth with you, asking and answering questions, trying to get to know you and your lifestyle well enough that we can get a clear picture of the kind of bunny that would make a happy addition to your home. We ask you to contact us at a minimum of every two weeks so we can keep the conversation going and get to know you well enough to help pick out a bunny that will bring you joy.

Guacamole - pet baby buck
Date of Birth: March 15, 2022 Parents: Smudge & Hamish Color/Pattern: Magpie Status: Available to families with approved New Bunny Questionnaires Pick-Up Date: On or after May 10, 2022 Price: $275 Sweet little Guacamole is our special needs Bun. As most of our readers are aware, his mother nibbled off the outer portion of his left ear when he was born. We were quite concerned that he might not make it, but are so thankful he never developed an infection, and the dead ear tissue came off and healed over on its own. Because Guacamole is missing his outer ear and the inner ear area is quite exposed, sounds are greatly amplified on that side, so a quiet, peaceful home is exactly what he will need. Loud TV/music, barking dogs, families with occasional crying babies/yelling kids, would not be a good fit for his needs, so we are going to place him very carefully. We do not know if he will be prone to developing any sort of infections because of his lack of the protective ear covering, or if he will be healthy because air can circulate more easily. We urge our clients who are considering Guacamole to speak with their bunny vets to ask if they have any concerns or care recommendations about taking on such a Bun. This is a first for Hot Cross Buns, so we are learning as we go. All things considered, he has been a very healthy and seemingly well-adjusted little buck. Guac, as we call him, thrives on quiet, gentle interactions. He's a pretty mellow little guy and likes to sit near people for pets, rather than on laps for cuddles. He's a side-kick kind of a Bun, who will stay by his person's side while s/he reads a book or watches a quiet movie and gives him lots of pets. He's not very playful at this point, but will do some tiny binkies and little shimmies of joy when he's feeling very relaxed and happy. He absolutely loves having the area around his missing outer ear rubbed and massaged. He practically purrs with contentment. Guacamole is not fond of vocally louder people, or those who tend to be very expressive in their vocal intonations and hand motions. He has a distinct preference for quiet people with more monotone type voices. They are less startling for him and he seems to find them more soothing. We discovered this because I am more expressive and tend to be louder while my daughter, Miss E, is quieter and more moderate in her speaking voice. We experimented with other family members and visitors, and his pattern of preference seems to hold true. He gravitates towards quieter people and shies away from louder ones. As a part of his special needs, Guac spends more time scanning places (please see the side note below his pictures for information on scanning) than his magpie litter mates do, so we believe he is compensating for his auditory imbalance by being more alert and on guard for any potential danger. It is more difficult for him to relax, but he has the ability to do so when he feels well and truly safe. Guac is a wonderful little guy and can live a very happy life with the right person/family who is able to work with his needs and preferences. He is a delightful bunny and has so much joy and love just waiting to bubble over for the people who take the time to understand him and help him thrive. As part of our placement agreement, all Hot Cross Buns are required to be spayed/neutered at six months of age. Guacamole will go to his new home with a bag full of goodies including: a packet of bunny care information, a small bag of transition food and hay, a snack baggie of old-fashioned raw oats for treats, a toy, and a fleece snuggle mat. |
A quick side note about magpie Buns...You may have noticed that Smudge & Hamish's magpie babies have a reddish cast to their eyes. When you first glance at them, they look like a normal brownish shade, but if light or a camera flash hits them at the right angles, their eyes take on a redder appearance. Because of this red cast, magpie bunnies "scan" their surroundings frequently. They eyes see movement in shadows differently than a bunny who does not have the red cast. You will see notice a magpie (there are other colors who do this, too) slowly move his/her head back and forth, almost in a hypnotic manner. The bunny is trying to detect any movement that could be an indication that a threat is nearby, ready to pounce. Because bunnies are prey animals, magpies have been blessed with this instinct to look for perceived dangers and respond accordingly. A magpie will be more comfortable in rooms that are not bright and sunny. Indirect light is better for them, because they will be able to scan their surroundings and relax when they realize all is well. Bunnies with this red cast tend to be more aware of their surroundings and are more comfortable when being gently spoken to while they are being approached. Sudden sounds and movements tend to put them on edge. |

Gouda - pet baby doe
Date of Birth: March 15, 2022 Parents: Genevieve (Jenny) & Pumpkin Roll Color/Pattern: Solid Cream Status: RESERVED for Aidan M. Pick-Up Date: On or after May 10, 2022 Price: $275 Gouda is the biggest bunny from this litter and is a lovely cream color. She is very quiet, gentle, and observant. Gouda has the makings of being an excellent bonding bunny in the future, as she seems to have a very strong nurturing instinct. She loves to cuddle with Cheez Whiz and Cheddar. She's a bit of a wallflower initially, and watches the action for a while when she is placed in a new situation. It takes her some time, (usually 5-10 minutes) before she decides if she wants to participate or not. If she does, she will play and explore gently, and do some tiny binkies and shimmies of joy. If the activity is too much for her, she will usually hunker down into muffin-mode and observe for a while before beginning to doze off into a nap. She is okay with being held for brief periods of time, but truly enjoys pets and head rubs. Gouda is definitely the mellow doe in this litter. Her energy level ranks at about a 4.5/10. She is not a fan of barking dogs, so would definitely prefer a dog-free home. Cats don't seem to bother her at all. As part of our placement agreement, all Hot Cross Buns are required to be spayed/neutered at six months of age. Gouda will go to her new home with a bag full of goodies, including: a packet of bunny care information, a small bag of transition food and hay, a snack baggie of old-fashioned raw oats for treats, a toy, and a fleece snuggle mat. |

Cheez Whiz - pet baby doe
Date of Birth: March 15, 2022 Parents: Genevieve (Jenny) & Pumpkin Roll Color/Pattern: Broken Cream Status: RESERVED for Aidan M. Pick-Up Date: On or after May 10, 2022 Price: $275 Cheez Whiz knows how to relax and how to have a good time. She is silly and playful, while still being fairly easy to handle. When she's ready for attention, she will happily dive-bomb into a lap for pets and cuddles, but don't expect her to sit still for long! She will dance and prance her way around the room when she's feeling silly, but will settle down and watch the world quietly go by when she's ready for some down time. She is a bit more mellow than her sister, Gorgonzola, and for that reason we placed her into the middle-of-the-road category. Energy level is about a 6/10. As part of our placement agreement, all Hot Cross Buns are required to be spayed/neutered at six months of age. Cheez Whiz will go to her new home with a bag full of goodies, including: a packet of bunny care information, a small bag of transition food and hay, a snack baggie of old-fashioned raw oats for treats, a toy, and a fleece snuggle mat. |

Chimichanga - pet baby buck
Date of Birth: March 15, 2022 Parents: Smudge & Hamish Color/Pattern: Magpie Status: RESERVED for Becky F. Pick-Up Date: On or after May 10, 2022 Price: $300 Chimichanga, or Chimi, as we usually call him, is a gorgeous little guy. He has attracted a lot of interest and it's very easy to see why. His lovely coat is gradually taking on more of the typical magpie markings, which we so love. Personality-wise, this little buck is rather like a pet rock in a bunny suit. Chimi is very mellow, as in you practically need to check for a pulse kind of mellow. He comes across as an old soul/lumpy Bun who really doesn't have much zest for life. He likes to eat, cuddle, sleep, and watch the world when he feels like it. He likes to be warm, cozy, and comfy. We really should have named him Yoga Pants. LOL. Chimi loves to receive lots of pets. We had some people over who met him yesterday and he just stayed in one spot, draped across one person's neck at a time, while they gently petted his little body. He was in heaven! When he was transferred from one person to the other, it would take him a minute to settle in, but he was back to his happy place in no time. He may come across as a furry pet rock, but he does occasionally exert himself after a good cuddle session. We witnessed some tiny binkies and a bit of curiosity today when he was out for his play session with his litter mates. Chimi even climbed up some couch cushions, so he may be emerging from his lumpy-Bun identity. He does seem to prefer gentler people and situations, because of his overall quiet temperament. He seems to be ambivalent to cats, but muffins up and scrunches his eyes shut when he is around barking dogs, so they definitely make him uncomfortable. As part of our placement agreement, all Hot Cross Buns are required to be spayed/neutered at six months of age. Chimi will go to his new home with a bag full of goodies, including: a packet of bunny care information, a small bag of transition food and hay, a snack baggie of old-fashioned raw oats for treats, a toy, and a fleece snuggle mat. |
